Ceramic Coating

Troubleshooting

Ceramic coating problems and how to fix them

Most coating problems are one of five things: mineral water spots, high spots left from application, washing too soon after install, contamination that makes the coating look like it failed, or a coating that really has worn out. Each has a different fix, so work out which one you have before reaching for a stronger product.

Pick your problem

Each guide below uses what coating makers say in their own instructions and care guides, with links. We haven’t tested the products named.

Before you blame the coating

Wash the car gently with a coating-safe shampoo, dry it and look again in daylight. A lot of “failed” coatings are coatings covered in road film or minerals. Makers including GYEON, Gtechniq and CARPRO say contamination cuts water beading and that decontamination often brings it back.

Ceramic Pro and System X both say a coating doesn’t stop hard-water spots, rock chips or deep scratches. If that’s the problem, the coating may be doing exactly what it can.

If a shop did the coating

Call the installer before you try strong chemicals or polishing. Many coating warranties need inspections or approved products, and some, like Ceramic Pro’s and System X’s, say brush car washes void them.

Ask shops what’s in the price

Find installers near you, then ask about the exact product, the prep and which surfaces get coated.

Questions about ceramic coating problems

Why does my ceramic coating have water spots?

Minerals in tap water or rain dry on the surface. Makers say a coating doesn’t prevent them and that strong beading can leave more drops behind. Dry the car promptly and remove spots early, before they etch.

Why did my ceramic coating stop beading?

Usually contamination, soap residue or a topper sitting on top. Makers say decontamination often brings beading back. If the paint also feels rough and looks duller, the coating may be worn.

Can a ceramic coating be fixed or redone?

High spots can be leveled or polished out, a worn coating can be topped or replaced, and an old coating can be polished off before a new one. Which one you need depends on the problem.
