Ceramic Coating

Troubleshooting

Is my ceramic coating failing?

Probably not, if the only sign is weaker beading. Makers say iron fallout, road film and soap residue all cut water beading, and decontamination often brings it back. If the paint also feels rough and looks duller after a proper clean, the coating is likely worn and needs topping or replacing.

The signs of a worn coating

GYEON says the main sign is water sheeting instead of beading, along with paint that feels less smooth and visibly lower gloss. All three together, it says, suggest a full recoat.

Contamination comes first

GYEON says invisible iron fallout builds up and gradually cuts water beading, and suggests iron decontamination about twice a year. Gtechniq says a fine film that washing misses can block a coating’s water behavior, and that its EXO can often be refreshed with its iron and fallout removers.

CARPRO’s distributor says some soaps leave residue that temporarily spoils beading, and recommends a residue-free shampoo, an iron remover for fallout and a mineral remover for spots. Adam’s suggests claying at least twice a year; CARPRO prefers an iron remover over clay.

  • Wash with a residue-free, coating-safe shampoo.
  • Use an iron remover made for coated cars.
  • Treat mineral spots separately.
  • Check the water behavior again in similar weather.

What wears a coating out

GYEON names brush car washes, abrasive sponges and UV. Ceramic Pro and System X say brush washes void their warranties.

What to do next

If decontamination brings it back, keep up a gentle wash and a coating-safe topper if the maker suggests one. IGL suggests a booster every few months and a professional inspection every six months.

If it doesn’t, GYEON suggests a top-up product for a coating that is a few years old but still smooth, and decontamination, polishing and a fresh coat when it’s older. A shop can tell you which.

Professional installation

Ask shops what’s in the price

Find installers near you, then ask about the exact product, the prep and which surfaces get coated.

Questions about my ceramic coating failing

Why is my ceramic coating not beading anymore?

Most often contamination or soap residue sitting on top. Makers say decontamination usually brings beading back. If it doesn’t, the coating may be worn.

Does a coating need decontamination?

Yes, occasionally. GYEON suggests iron decontamination about twice a year, and Adam’s suggests clay at least twice a year. CARPRO prefers an iron remover to clay.

Can a topper fix a failing coating?

A topper restores water behavior on top, but it doesn’t rebuild a worn coating underneath.
