Ceramic coating vs PPF: what each costs over the years you keep the car
A coating is cheaper the day you buy it. Film lasts longer. Enter how long you'll keep the car and what you're considering, and we'll total the advertised prices over that time, counting each time the job would be redone.
How the total is worked out
- Prices are what independent shops advertise, from the same shops' posted prices on our cost pages. The range is the middle half of those prices; the middle figure is the median.
- Coating durability is what the shop advertised. We use the low end of a range, so a "3 to 4 year" coating is counted as lasting 3 years. A "lifetime" coating is counted once.
- Film is counted as lasting 10 years, the length of the consumer warranties XPEL, 3M and SunTek publish for their main clear films. See the film brands compared.
- Not included: wash products, paid inspections or top-ups some warranties require, paint correction before a coating, and any package discount for buying film and coating together.

Coating and film costs over time: common questions
Is PPF cheaper than ceramic coating in the long run?
It can be, depending on how long you keep the car and how long the coating lasts. Using September 2026 advertised medians, a 5–7 year coating applied 2 times over ten years comes to about $2,400, and full-front film, done once, to about $2,000. Film covers less of the car but stops chips, which a coating does not.
How often does ceramic coating need to be reapplied?
As often as the product's stated durability, and sooner if it is not maintained as its maker says. Shops advertise coatings from one year to "lifetime". Lifetime warranties usually require inspections or approved maintenance, so read the conditions.
How long does paint protection film last?
The main clear films from XPEL, 3M and SunTek carry 10-year consumer warranties, which is why the calculator assumes one application every 10 years. Warranties cover the film's defects, not damage from impacts or accidents.
Should I get both PPF and ceramic coating?
Many owners put film on the front, where chips happen, and a coating on the rest of the car, or a coating over the film to make it easier to wash. It costs the most up front. Shops often price the two together for less than the separate prices shown here, so ask for a package quote.
