Aftercare

How to look after a ceramic coated car

A coating rarely fails. It gets buried, stripped or scratched, and all three happen during the wash. Four rules cover almost everything, and none of them costs more than a different bottle of soap.

What to do, and what undoes it

Six habits decide whether a coating lasts its term or a third of it.

pH-neutral, coating-safe shampoo

The label to look for says pH-neutral or coating-safe. That is the whole requirement.

Stripping that layer is the most common reason a coating stops beading months early.

Dish soap, degreaser or wheel cleaner

Anything sold on cutting power strips the sacrificial top layer of the coating.

Two buckets, a grit guard, straight lines

Mitt goes car, rinse bucket, soap bucket, car. Grit leaves the mitt before it returns.

Almost every swirl mark on a car was put there during a wash, not by the road.

One bucket, a sponge, circular motions

A sponge holds grit against the paint. A circular scratch catches light from every angle.

Conditions Shop wash

Shade, and panels cool to the touch

Early morning or a garage. If the panel is warm, wait rather than work faster.

Minerals left by evaporating water etch into the coating and need machine work to remove.

Direct sun on a hot panel

Soap and water dry on the paint before you can rinse, which is where spotting starts.

Dry it yourself, immediately

A large plush drying towel, or a filtered blower for panel gaps, mirrors and badges.

Water spotting is the complaint we see most on coated cars, and it is entirely avoidable.

Let it sheet off and air dry

A coated car sheds water so well it looks finished. The minerals in that water stay.

Machines Shop wash

Touchless, if you have to use one

No physical contact with the paint. Expect strong chemicals, so top up afterwards.

One brush wash can undo a coating you paid four figures for in about four minutes.

Tunnel washes with brushes

The brushes are the swirls. They carry grit from every car that went through before yours.

An SiO2 topper every few months

A thin refresh layer over the base coating. Roughly ten minutes after a wash.

A coating that has stopped beading has usually been buried rather than lost.

Conventional wax over the top

Not harmful, but it sits on the coating and masks it rather than refreshing it.

What it costs to get this wrong

A coating runs $599 to $1,399 and it seals the finish it was applied to. Swirl a coated car and the fix isn't another coating, it is removing the coating, correcting the paint at $345 to $700, and coating it again. The two-bucket method exists to avoid precisely that sequence.

Coating maintenance questions

How do you wash a ceramic coated car?

With a pH-neutral soap, two buckets and a grit guard, a plush mitt, straight-line motions, out of direct sun, and dry it immediately with a large drying towel or a blower. That sequence is the whole answer, and every part of it exists to keep grit and minerals off the finish rather than to clean more effectively.

Can you use normal car shampoo on a ceramic coating?

Only if it is pH-neutral and carries no wax or gloss additive. Ordinary shampoos are often mildly alkaline to cut road film, which is exactly the chemistry that degrades the top of a coating. A coating-safe soap costs a few dollars more per bottle and is the cheapest protection available for a four-figure finish.

Why has my ceramic coating stopped beading?

Almost always because it is buried rather than gone. Bonded contamination, road film and wash marring sit on top of the coating and stop water from reaching it. A proper decontamination wash followed by an SiO2 topper usually restores the behavior. If it does not, the coating has genuinely worn and needs reapplying.

How often should a coated car be washed?

Every one to two weeks for a daily driver, and sooner if bird droppings or bug splatter land on it. A coating buys time against etching, it does not buy immunity, and acidic contamination left to bake in sun will mark the coating and eventually the clear coat.

Do I need to decontaminate a coated car?

Periodically, yes, with an iron remover and a gentle chemical decontamination rather than a clay bar. Clay is abrasive and will mar the coating. Iron fallout bonds to any surface including a coating, and removing it chemically is how the beading comes back without touching the coating itself.
