Ceramic Coating

The best random orbital polishers for beginners

A random orbital is the machine that lets someone correct their own paint without the risk a rotary carries. It is also the step a coating depends on, because a coating locks in whatever the paint looked like when it went on.

What separates a good one from a bad one

Free-spinning is what makes it beginner-safe
A dual action stalls under pressure instead of generating heat in one place. That is the whole reason it is hard to burn paint with one.
Throw decides speed and control
A short throw is slower and far easier around edges and complex panels. A long throw covers a hood quickly and is harder to keep flat.
Compare it against the job it replaces
Paint correction is one of the priced services on this site. A machine that costs less than a single correction pays for itself the first time.

What the professional job costs instead

Every product below is competing with paying somebody to do it. Across 547 shops that publish their pricing, that work runs $345–$700. That is the number worth holding in your head while reading the rest of this page — it is the comparison a product review normally leaves out.

Adam's Polishes Foam Cannon Our pick

Adam's Polishes Foam Cannon

A foam lance sold with the common fittings included.

A pre-wash foam lifts the loose grit off before anything touches the paint, which is when most of the damage would otherwise happen. The single biggest upgrade to a home wash, and this is the one you can buy without first working out which adapter your pressure washer takes.

Worth knowing first

Thicker foam needs the right shampoo. Cheap soap in a good cannon still produces bubbles and no cling.

Griot's Garage G9 Random Orbital Polisher

A long-throw random orbital polisher.

More on this one

Random orbital is the machine a beginner cannot easily burn paint with, and long throw is what makes it fast enough to be worth owning. This is the one most people should start on.

A polisher does not fix a wash routine. Correcting paint and then swirling it again is an expensive loop.

The cannon most professional detailers name, with brass internals and a wider adjustment range than the plastic ones. Worth the extra if you already know your fitting.

Needs a pressure washer, and the fitting has to match yours. Check before buying.

Rupes is the machine name that appears most often in professional credentials, and the small one reaches the areas a full-size polisher physically cannot.

Not a first polisher. Buy it second, when the big machine cannot reach something.

Sun Joe SPX3000 Pressure Washer
Also good

Sun Joe SPX3000 Pressure Washer

An electric pressure washer at the entry end of the market.

A pressure washer is what makes a foam cannon and a proper pre-rinse possible, and this is the one most home detailers start with.

Electric machines are slower and less durable than gas. Fine for one car, not for a driveway business.

Chemical Guys TORQ Foam Blaster
Best value

Chemical Guys TORQ Foam Blaster

A foam gun that runs from a garden hose.

No pressure washer required, which is the entire argument. It makes a pre-wash possible for people who cannot use a cannon.

Thinner foam and far less cling than a real cannon. It is a compromise, not an equivalent.

Common questions

Do I need a pressure washer and a foam cannon?

Need is strong. What a foam pre-wash does is lift loose grit off the paint before a mitt touches it, and that is when most wash damage happens. If you only ever buy one piece of equipment, this is the one that changes the result most.

Is a machine polisher safe for a beginner?

A random orbital is, which is why it is the one to start on. The pad rotates and oscillates, so it does not build heat in one spot the way a rotary does, and burning through paint with one takes real determination.

Should I polish a coated car?

Not without removing the coating first, and at that point you are redoing the whole job. Polishing is what you do before a coating goes on, or when it comes off. Between those, a topper is the tool.

Where this fits

This is one shelf of tools and equipment. The rest of what a coated car needs, and what each shelf is for, is on the shop — and if you would rather have the work done properly, the installer directory lists shops by what they publish rather than what they pay.

Published rates are a range. What you pay comes down to size, paint condition and how much correction the finish needs first. Tell us the car and we will put it in front of shops that publish their pricing.

Know what the market is actually charging

Once a month, read off the price lists of the 547 shops that publish one. Whether you are about to buy or about to quote, it is the same data from opposite sides.

For people about to spend four figures on paint, and wanting to spend it once.

  • What shops are actually chargingWhen the published price bands move in your state, and by how much. You will know whether a quote is normal before you are sitting in the office.
  • What a quote should spell outThe lines that separate a real quote from a number: correction stages, the warranty terms, what happens if it fails.
  • Aftercare that changes the outcomeThe few things that decide whether a coating reaches its term, and the ordinary products that quietly end it early.
