Treat that term as the warranty the shop is willing to write down. How long the coating actually survives on your car depends on where it is parked and how it is washed, and no shop, including the ones quoted here, has published evidence for the number on its price list.

Every term shops sell, and what each one costs
Durability is the thing coating prices are actually built on. A shop offering four tiers is usually offering four warranty lengths of the same chemistry, applied in more or fewer layers. Here is what businesses publishing both a term and a price are charging.

The term is a warranty, and warranties have conditions
A shop writing "5 year" on a price list is committing to something specific, and it is almost never "this coating will look new for five years". It is closer to: we will warrant gloss and water behavior for five years provided the car comes back to us for a maintenance wash on our schedule, never goes through an automatic wash, and is never polished by anyone else.
That makes the term a useful thing to compare quotes on and a poor thing to plan around. Two shops selling a five year coating at very different prices may be selling the same product with different maintenance obligations attached, and the cheaper one can cost more over five years once the required washes are counted. Ask what the schedule is, what it costs, and what voids the warranty.
Price per year, which reorders everything
Divide each tier's median by the years it is sold on and the ranking inverts. The 8+ year tier works out at $161 a year and the 1 year tier at $600, so the cheapest sticker on the price list is the most expensive way to keep a car coated. How long a coating lasts on your car. Nobody publishing on this question can, ourselves included. It would take a controlled study of coated vehicles over years, and what exists instead is a trade full of warranty terms and a lot of confident writing built on top of them. Everything above is a measurement of what businesses sell and charge. It is not a measurement of what happens to the paint.

It is a warranty term, and what the warranty covers is usually gloss and hydrophobic behavior under conditions the shop sets: a maintenance wash at their premises on a schedule, no automatic car washes, no polishing. Miss the schedule and the term ends early by agreement. The coating does not fall off on the anniversary, and it does not keep behaving like new for the whole term either. Ask for the warranty in writing and read what voids it before you use the number to compare two quotes.
What is a lifetime ceramic coating?
65 shops advertise one, at a median of $1,499. "Lifetime" in this trade means for as long as you own the car, and it is conditional on the same maintenance schedule as any other tier. It is a commercial term rather than a claim about chemistry.
What shortens a ceramic coating fastest?
The wash. Automatic washes with spinning brushes put fine scratches into the coating, and strong alkaline soaps strip the layer that makes water bead. Both change how the car looks and behaves long before the term is up, and both are things the owner controls. Parking outside in strong sun and leaving bird droppings and hard water spots to dry on are the next two.
Can you tell when a coating has stopped working?
Water is the usual test. A working coating pulls water into tight beads that run off; a spent one lets water sheet and sit. That test is about the top layer and it can be restored with a maintenance product, so a car failing it has not necessarily lost the coating. A shop can tell you which of the two you have.
