Ceramic coating for cars
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that cures into a hard, clear layer bonded to the clear coat. It costs $599 to $1,399 professionally applied, and what it buys you is mostly ease of ownership rather than armour.

What ceramic coating for cars actually is
A ceramic coating is silica-based liquid that cures on the paint into a thin glass-like layer. It is chemically bonded rather than sitting on top like wax, which is why it lasts years instead of weeks and why removing it takes machine polishing.
What it does, and what it doesn't
What it does
- Makes the car dramatically easier to wash, which is the benefit owners actually notice
- Resists chemical etching from bird droppings, bug splatter and acid rain
- Holds gloss and slows UV fade on the clear coat
- Sheets water, so the car dries faster and spots less
What it won't do
- Stop stone chips. Nothing chemical does. That is what film is for
- Prevent scratches from a bad wash. A sponge and one bucket will still swirl it
- Remove existing swirls. It seals them in, optically clear, for the life of the coating
- Make the car self-cleaning. It makes it easier to clean, which is not the same claim
How to choose, and what to ask
Three things that separate two quotes which look like the same job.
Pick the durability tier, not the brand
Every shop sells a ladder, and the rung sets the price far more than the label does. One year runs $600 at the median, five to seven runs $1,200, and per year of protection the longer tier is the cheaper one.
Budget for correction first
A coating is optically clear and permanent-ish, so whatever is under it stays under it. Correction runs $345 to $700 and it is the difference between a coated car that looks new and a coated car with sealed-in swirls.
Ask what surfaces are included
Paint only, or wheels, glass, trim and interior as well? Two quotes at the same number frequently cover different amounts of car, and this is the question that exposes it.

Ceramic coating for cars: common questions
Is a ceramic coating worth it for a daily driver?
It is the case where it makes most sense, because the benefit is maintenance rather than showroom finish. A daily driver collects bird droppings, road film and bug splatter, and a coating means those release with a rinse instead of etching. At $950 median against years of paid waxing, the arithmetic usually works.
Can I apply a ceramic coating myself?
Yes, and consumer-grade kits are genuinely capable now. The gap is not the product, it is the preparation: a professional coating price is mostly correction labor, and a DIY coating over uncorrected paint locks in the defects just as permanently as an expensive one does.
How long does a ceramic coating really last?
As long as the tier you bought, if it is maintained. Coatings do not fail so much as get buried under bonded contamination and wash marring. The most commonly sold tier is five to seven years, offered by 344 of the shops we track.
