Ceramic Coating

Troubleshooting

How do you fix high spots in a ceramic coating?

A high spot is coating that wasn’t leveled before it cured. Caught within minutes, a little more product on the spot and a clean wipe usually lifts it. Once it has cured, the makers say it has to be polished off and that area recoated.

What a high spot looks like

CARPRO describes a high spot as excess coating that wasn’t wiped off. IGL says they show as darker patches or rainbow streaks, and are often easier to see after the coating cures.

Fixing it fresh

CARPRO’s US distributor says a little more coating applied within minutes will lift the spot. After that it suggests a dot of a fine polish or a panel wipe on the spot, then recoating it and about six inches around it, feathering inward from the edge.

IGL’s Kenzo data sheet says an uneven base coat within two hours can be removed with a little of its top coat, but after 12 hours it must be polished off and reapplied.

Fixing it after it cures

Once cured, the makers agree it has to be polished off and that area coated again. Gtechniq says the same for Crystal Serum Light residue left to cure. If a shop applied the coating, ask them to fix it.

Avoiding high spots

Work in small sections, about 2 square feet. CARPRO suggests ambient light rather than a single spot light, which can hide high spots, and checking each panel from several angles. IGL says cloudy daylight shows them, while direct sun hides them and speeds curing.

GYEON says to wipe when the coating starts to “sweat,” within about 30 seconds, leveling with a low-pile towel then finishing with a high-pile one, using at least two towels. Test your timing on one panel first.

Professional installation

Ask shops what’s in the price

Find installers near you, then ask about the exact product, the prep and which surfaces get coated.

Questions about ceramic coating high spots

Will high spots go away on their own?

No. Once the coating cures, the makers say a high spot has to be polished off and recoated.

Can I use more coating to remove a high spot?

Within minutes, yes: CARPRO and IGL both say fresh product softens it. After about 12 hours IGL says it needs polishing.

Why can’t I see high spots until later?

Direct sun and a single bright light can hide them. IGL says they often show more once cured, and cloudy daylight reveals them.
