What 3M says about the film

3M’s March 2024 data sheet for Pro Series 200 Gloss describes a high-gloss, low orange peel film with a smooth hydrophobic top surface. It is 7.8 mil thick with its adhesive, and it’s meant for factory (OEM) painted surfaces only.

3M says minor scratches and marks heal with heat applied to the film surface. Its older matte film, Pro Series Matte, is a clear satin film 3M recommends for full wraps; its 2018 data sheet makes no self-healing claim.

The 3M warranty

3M’s data sheet states a 10-year consumer warranty and sends buyers to the warranty card or a 3M authorized installer for details. 3M’s regional pages tie the warranty to installation by a certified 3M installer.

Ask the shop for the warranty card, and ask what it excludes. We couldn’t read 3M’s current US warranty card, so we don’t list its exclusions here.

Coatings and wax over 3M film

3M’s data sheet says 3M Ceramic Coating, 3M Ceramic Boost and 3M Show Car Paste Wax can be used on the film, and says not to use dyed waxes or abrasive polishes on it.

Removing 3M film

3M’s data sheet says to remove the film with a heat gun or steamer, peeling at 30 to 60 degrees from the paint. Because 3M limits the film to factory paint, ask before film goes on, or comes off, a repainted panel.

What 3M film costs

Shops post a median of $1,999 for paint protection film, with half of posted prices between $1,199 and $3,800 (127 shops). By coverage, shops post a median of $1,195 for partial front, $2,000 for full front, $6,000 for full body.
